Subsea & ROV Systems

Subsea Tools and Intervention

Subsea tools and intervention equipment is the tooling a work class ROV carries to operate, test, repair or recover subsea hardware. This category includes torque tools, hot stabs and receptacles, BOP intervention skids and pumps, cutters, cleaning tools and module running tools. Most of it engages the ROV interfaces defined in API RP 17H.

How ROV tooling works

The ROV's auxiliary hydraulic circuit powers most tools. A torque tool engages a standard bucket on a subsea panel and turns a valve stem or connector drive screw to a set torque and turn count. A hot stab plugs into a receptacle and carries fluid to one function, such as a BOP ram close. A BOP intervention skid mounts under the vehicle and carries a pump, and sometimes a fluid reservoir, to supply that hot stab at the flow and pressure the BOP needs. Running tools latch onto subsea control modules and similar units to install or recover them.

Configurations

Torque tool classes

API RP 17H, carried over from ISO 13628-8, groups torque interfaces into seven classes by maximum torque.

ClassMaximum torque (N·m)Maximum torque (ft-lbf)
16850
2271200
31,3551,000
42,7112,000
56,7795,000
613,55810,000
733,89525,000

The valve or connector maker sets the class and the torque limit for each interface. Size the tool to that class, not to the largest one you might meet.

Standards and certification

Failure modes and inspection

An inspection calibrates torque tools on a bench against a reference transducer and pressure tests hot stabs and hoses. It then function tests each tool on a vehicle and samples fluid cleanliness on pumps.

Documentation

Integration

Every tool must fit the auxiliary circuit of your work class ROV, and its mounting and weight must suit the vehicle's payload. Hot stabs and intervention pumps must match the receptacles and closing volumes of your BOP stack. Check that the fluid the skid pumps matches your BOP control fluid.

Refurbishment, rent or buy

Refurbishment replaces seals, repeats the pressure test and issues a fresh calibration certificate, after which a tool can go straight into a tool pool. Keep a calibrated torque tool and the hot stabs that fit your BOP panel on board for every well. Rent cutters and special tools for one-off jobs. Unused surplus tooling from cancelled projects carries little risk once calibrated and pressure tested.

Oceaneering, Forum Energy Technologies and Schilling Robotics (TechnipFMC) are well-known tooling makers, alongside many specialist tooling companies.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do ROV torque tools need calibration?

ROV torque tools need calibration, because valve and connector makers specify torque limits that must not be exceeded. Ask for a current certificate traceable to a reference standard. Recalibrate after any repair and at the interval your quality system or the tool maker sets.

What hot stab do I need for ROV BOP intervention?

The hot stab you need is set by the receptacle on your BOP's ROV intervention panel. API RP 17H defines the standard receptacle and stab geometry so tools from different makers fit. Match the type, port count and working pressure to the panel.

Which API 17H torque class does a subsea valve need?

The valve maker sets the API RP 17H torque class for each valve, through the bucket it fits and the torque limit it states. Classes run from 1, at 68 N·m (50 ft-lbf), to 7, at 33,895 N·m (25,000 ft-lbf). Carry a tool that covers the class and set its limit to the valve maker's figure.

Can my ROV drive a BOP intervention pump?

Your ROV can drive a BOP intervention pump if its auxiliary hydraulic circuit supplies the flow and pressure the pump needs. The pump must then close your rams within API Standard 53 response times. Compare the pump maker's input demand with the vehicle's auxiliary output, then prove it with a function test.

Should I rent or buy ROV tooling?

Buy the ROV tooling you need on every well and rent the rest. A drilling rig usually keeps a calibrated torque tool, its BOP hot stabs and an intervention skid on board. Cutters, dredges and project-specific tools are usually cheaper to rent.
